The short version of the relevant backstory involves a "put all the bad eggs in one basket and then drop the basket" maneuver. Except for "bad eggs" substitute "troops who have become inconvenient, including the heroes and their ship because they have Coordinator cooties," for "basket" substitute "Alaskan base," and for "drop" substitute "nuke."
Everything subsequent to that is admittedly mostly me self-indulgently positing that if my favorite characters hadn't hooked up, the world would be a worse place in a thousand little ways. (Although in my defense the other likely scenario is "four months later the world ends.")
