Day 19 - A pairing you've rooted for since the beginning?
Usually shipping canon makes things kind of easy for me, since in most cases it's not too hard to tell when a writer is setting two characters up as a couple, and it's just a matter of getting to like the characters (or not, as the case may be). But in the case of Shuurei and Ryuuki in Saiunkoku Monogatari, I was on board from day one, pretty much from the moment that she took a bribe of 500 gold to become his temporary concubine in order to make him take an interest in politics and he lied about who he was when she first met him. I have continued to be on board throughout Ryuuki's efforts at making everyone think he's a) an idiot and b) gay, throughout everybody else ever falling for Shuurei, throughout Shuurei's determined lack of interest in romance of any kind and through not one but two season finales which both amounted to the two of them acknowledging that they as a couple may in fact never happen.
And they still have not actually happened, at least not in any of the material that I have access too, but damnit they're so great together and I live in hope that there will someday come a way to reconcile Shuurei's dreams of serving as a government official with Ryuuki's dreams of getting Shuurei to marry him.
