As far as I know, although they are covering the books too - or at least, there's an upcoming episode called Storm Front - not every episode is taken directly from the books. The pilot, for instance, is an original.

There are some significant changes, but none that are bothering me much so far. Neither, I confess, is TV-Murphy, despite not being blonde. Of course, she hasn't been on screen a whole lot yet, and they seem to have mastered the gist of Harry and Murphy's early dynamic.
