What I'm Watching: Sengoku Basara

joiedecombatTaking a break from Nodame Cantabile mostly because the end of episode 13 was way too cute and I want to draw it out longer.
Instead I am watching Sengoku Basara. I could tell you about it, but, well, this video pretty much sums it up:

That is pretty much everything you need to know about Sengoku Basara right there. Come for the crazy samurai antics, stay for the twisty Warring States-era battlefield politics. Or vice versa. Most of the main cast are actual historical figures like Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura, but, well, the series doesn't actually give much of a rat's ass about historical accuracy. Historical hero upgrades and historical villain upgrades are handed out like candy and Masamune's horse has Harley Davidson exhaust pipes, and that's just the beginning.
My favorite so far, though, is Sarutobi Sasuke (see icon). Is this because he is Yet Another Takehito Koyasu Character, or is it because he's such a priceless straight-man to the epic HOT BLOODEDNESS of Yukimura and Shingen (seriously, only sane man in Kai) and he has a schoolboy crush on fellow ninja Kasuga which he chooses to express in a combination of constant teasing and very good advice given in moments of genuine concern?
Probably both.

Man, I'm surprised that in this mess of over-the-top CRAZY warrior chars, my favourite turns out to be the NORMAL GUY (who wants to unite Japan not out of any particular desire for power or status, just because it's the Righteous thing to do!!!)

Or something. I swear Kenshin pretty much said that was the whole point of that business in the first episode.
Also ♥ Sasuke getting up in Kasuga's face later on all "PUT YOUR SQUISHY GIRL FEELINGS AWAY FOR TWO SECONDS AND THINK LIKE A NINJA well maybe Shingen just thought since you're my fiancee you'd be safer--"

Azai wins forever. I WANT TO HUG HIM ALL DAY.
...this may be because Azai is basically feudal samurai Chiaki, just replace music with honour, and you got him. Complete with fond grumpiness directed at the significant other.

Date: 2009-06-26 01:03 am (UTC)ROFL and very true, but I guess you really don't need to throw hissyfits in feudal Japan, when you can just as easily throw a katana/six katanas/FIRE spears/firestorms from FIRE spears/tornadoes/a gatling gun/a GIANT ROBOT/a Latin chant chorus.
Season 2 has already been announced. ~_~ FOR NEXT YEAR sadly, but it's something to look forward to!
And LOL oh Sasuke, just kiss her already and die horribly.
