Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand?
I said yesterday that shipping in Weiss Kreuz is a lost cause. Let me elaborate on that: sure, there are pairs of characters who make romantic connections and are cute and/or intriguing together. But there are absolutely no pairings in the entire series with a snowball's chance in hell of actually working out in any fashion, even a wrong and broken one (with two dubious canon exceptions that I'll get to in a minute). This is pretty much a theme of the whole franchise.
I suppose this counts as an unpopular fandom opinion, because Weiss Kreuz fandom is infamously rife with shipping of all kinds to the point that it's hard to find fanworks that involve the main characters actually killing anyone, but it's true. Weiss are terminal doom magnets and everyone they interact with on any significant level is nearly guaranteed to end up dead if they don't get away quickly enough; even one-episode background character romances are fated to end in disaster if Weiss get anywhere near them. It would be a horrific laundry list of women in refrigerators except that it's not just the women. It's everybody. Men are equally doomed.
I am not even kidding about this. A comprehensive checklist (rife with spoilers, obvs, but I'm pretty sure anyone reading this either already knows or doesn't care anyhow):
As you can see, I am not exaggerating when I say that almost every single one of the romances and even potential romances in the entirety of the Weiss Kreuz series ends in some horrible train wreck of disaster. And if you were wondering, the familial and platonic relationships don't tend to go much better.
While the absence of any serious canon relationships for the main cast is probably a big part of what makes the fandom such a slasher's paradise, I can't honestly see any pairing between any of the four leads that could possibly work out either, mostly because all four of them actively hate themselves and what they do so much, and are wrapped up in their various traumas so completely, that it complicates and impedes their ability to form relationships with one another. As Verbrechen/Strafe rather clarifies, these guys are barely even friends sometimes, let alone more. While I'm as fond as the next girl of horrible wrong messed-up broken relationships, the guys of Weiss mostly don't even seem capable of getting that far.
(I do dabble a little bit in Yoji/Aya, because especially in the context of Gluhen theirs is a very complicated dynamic and I do like horrible and broken and wrong, but Aya's complete lack of a sex drive and Yoji's various hangups prevent me from getting very serious about it.)
And we won't go into Weiss/Schwarz pairings except to say that the two groups' interactions default to "kill on sight" and that the most popular of these pairings is between Nagi and Omi, two characters who never directly interact except for about two scenes at the tail-end of Gluhen.
So to sum up: shipping in Weiss Kreuz just doesn't work and I don't get it at all. Ever.

I am not even kidding about this. A comprehensive checklist (rife with spoilers, obvs, but I'm pretty sure anyone reading this either already knows or doesn't care anyhow):
- Michiru and her boyfriend from episode 1: boyfriend gets a van dropped on him, and the new guy she starts falling for is actually trying to kill her.
- Maki and Yoji in episode 3: she's murdered by the targets.
- Yuriko and Ken in episode 5: she leaves the country and never sees him again.
- Sayaka and her boyfriend in episode 8: mad science turns him into a monster and Weiss have to kill him.
- Ouka and Omi: turn out to be
half-siblingscousins, and she gets murdered by Schwarz. - Takatori Masafumi and Schreient: he turns into a monster, Aya kills him, and then Schwarz kill him again later just to be dicks.
- Manx and Persia I: he's murdered by his brother, she dies in a later drama CD, and anyway he was still in love with his brother's dead wife. Who committed suicide.
- Botan and Aya: he dies and it's Aya's fault.
- Kyoko and Yoji in episode 21: she tries to kill Yoji and runs off, and was probably Neu anyhow.
- Asuka/Neu and Yoji in episode 22: she tries to kill him and dies proclaiming her love for Masafumi as Yoji strangles her. Assuming that Neu was Asuka at all and not just a convenient lookalike, in which case they'd be two separate entries in this list. Either way, the episode gets a lot of mileage out of Shinichiro Miki's ability to scream like his soul's being ripped out on cue.
- Nagi and Tot: Farfarello kills her, Nagi kills himself bringing her back, and although he's alive again the next episode, their relationship falls through a plot hole and is never heard from again.
- Sakura and Aya: Aya sees her as a surrogate for his little sister so she probably never had a chance anyhow, but in any case neither she or his sister ever sees him again after the Kapitel finale.
- That girl from the one drama CD who had a crush on Yoji: kidnapped, murdered, skinned, and her skin put on a mannequin.
- Shizu and Aya from Ranjatai: the text explicity states that Aya's interest in her isn't like that, and besides that she tries to kill him and then commits suicide.
- The dominatrix who thinks Aya's cute in Endless Rain: murdered and dismembered by Kikyou.
- Reika and Ken in Dramatic Precious: she turns out to be a target and forces Ken to kill her.
- Yoji's one-night-stand in Dramatic Precious: she runs off in disgust after Yoji unconsciously starts to strangle her during sex, and presumably never sees him again.
- Yoji's other one-night-stand in Dramatic Precious: Ayame and Asami murder her and leave her in Yoji's bed after Yoji passes out, because they're helpers.
- Birman and Persia II: both murdered separately by La Mort, and anyway he was married.
- Ayame and Asami: Ayame totally ignores Asami's feelings in favor of his raeg and they both end up killed by Weiss.
- Kimiko and Yoji in Fight Fire With Fire: she dies, and the translation's sketchy but I'm pretty sure it was his fault.
- Farfarello and Sally in that one Schwarz drama CD: supposedly actually works out somehow, but I have no idea how since Farfarello is a psycho who tortures priests to death in his spare time because he's got a grudge against God. This is the happiest ending anywhere in the series.
- Nozomi and Sena in Gluhen: she's brainwashed into committing suicide.
- Schelle (or whatever her name was) and Yoji in Gluhen episode 7: she tries to kill him, he kills her.
- Asami-sensei and Aya in Gluhen: she probably just reminded Aya of his sister, but in any case she gets impaled with extreme prejudice and dies in Aya's arms.
- Tsuji and Yoji in Gluhen: she tries to kill him (after royally screwing with his head), he kills her. You may be noticing a pattern in Yoji's relationships.
- Asuka and Yoji in Gluhen: this one actually works out, assuming you don't mind what Yoji had to go through to get there and also their whole relationship is based on the Florence Nightingale effect and Yoji's subconscious fixation on the other Asuka.
- Akagawa and Allison in Side B: he kills her, Aya kills him, Yuki is traumatized for life.
As you can see, I am not exaggerating when I say that almost every single one of the romances and even potential romances in the entirety of the Weiss Kreuz series ends in some horrible train wreck of disaster.
