What place does Tri occupy in Squall's life and why?
Squall refused to offer any thoughts on this one, so you'll have to settle for the player's objective observations.
It's hard to get a grip on just how Squall feels about Triumph. He adores her, clearly; in a way, she's a part of his support structure, a strand in the net of trust and affection and support that makes him able to function without waiting for the bottom to drop out. That she so clearly looks up to him helps him believe that he's worthwhile. He enjoys her company, and it's hard for him to let himself enjoy things. And he sees a lot of possibilities for her, which is something he can't remember having.
So he's very protective of her. But Squall doesn't really have any concept of children being different from adults, and the only effective way to protect her that he knows of is to make her capable of protecting herself. Which is why he treats her the way he does, why he doesn't pull his punches and why he does his best to teach her how to handle the real world. He doesn't want her to have to learn by trial and error the way that he did - or if she has to learn by making mistakes, he does his best to let that happen in a controlled fashion, so that she doesn't have to carry the weight that he has.
What did Squall think about Jubilee's gift and why?
He's still stuck on the concept of being given a gift in the first place. Nobody really has ever given him a gift before - especially not a gift in the purest sense of the word, something that he'd never get for himself, something that serves no real practical purpose. He really just doesn't understand why, especially given the circumstances surrounding it. He's still kind of waiting for it to turn out to have some use or some deeper significance that he's not seeing at the moment.
