Tiger & Bunny 14

The general plan for this episode seems to have been "hey, the past few episodes were pretty tense, huh? time for some balls-out ridiculousness."
You can definitely tell it's mid-series; the animation quality this episode was, uh, QUALITY. Seriously, guys, CGI banana? Not to mention poor Nathan's face. Hopefully it'll be cleaned up for DVD.
The new opening is good. I'll have to contemplate the new ending some more.
I've heard some fans worrying about the shift in Barnaby's personality in this episode, but I don't really think there's need for concern. He was remarkably mellow this episode, but I think that was for a couple of reasons. One is that, timeskip notwithstanding, narratively we're still riding the warm fuzzies from last episode, and this is the show's way of demonstrating that they're not backsliding into the same dynamic but actually have a fully-functioning partnership now. The other is that it's a Karina focus episode so we're mostly seeing the guys from her perspective, and Kotetsu and Barnaby's interaction is peripheral at best.
I mean, as much mutual back-patting as they do in the interview, they're also lying like rugs for like half of it, what with Tiger claiming that Barnaby never lost his cool and both of them saying they've always worked together this well. I thought it was cute, personally, and I'm sure Bunny has some baggage left to work through. They went out of their way to remind us that there's still a lot unresolved regarding Ouroboros and his parents' murder, which suggests to me that the storyline will be following up on that sooner or later.
In the meantime, Karina's crush on Kotetsu continues to be adorable. I have to wonder how they pitched the whole "singing and dancing" business to the guys, but it makes all those silly "dancing Tiger and Bunny" fan videos approximately a million times funnier: now it's canon.
The Second League are basically the Legion of Substitute Heroes, which amuses me even more now than it did back in episode 8. I don't find them interesting enough to hope that they get any more screen time, though; I'd rather keep the focus on the main ensemble. At least give us a Rock Bison episode first, guys! Poor Antonio is catching more crap now that Tiger and Barnaby are the new big thing; I'm glad he got something to do this episode (and how cute is it that Bunny and Blue Rose both assumed, not without precedent, that Kotetsu did that on purpose?).
Guess we're going to find out more about why Jake and Kriem glowed orange instead of blue. The apparent evolution of Tiger's powers makes me kind of sad, partly because of the hints as to where it's headed (oh, Kotetsu ;_;) and partly for the purely superficial and shallow reason that I think the blue NEXT glow effect that they've been using looks awesome and the orange one isn't near as cool. (My priorities, I know.)
Next episode: SKY HIGH IN LOVE. This is the episode that the director said made him cry, but I've been wanting a Sky High episode since we found out how adorable he is back in episode 5, so I don't even care how much it makes me baww, I'm looking forward to this.
In conclusion:

Date: 2011-07-03 04:43 pm (UTC)Also, I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me, but the white-haired girl in the next episode preview bears a suspicious resemblance to a less heavily made-up Kriem. Uh oh?

Date: 2011-07-05 08:44 pm (UTC)Although I am kind of sad that he didn't troll Karina like he did in that one drama CD, because that was the funniest thing ever. Possibly even moreso than Kotetsu's ridiculous dancing.

Date: 2011-07-05 09:04 pm (UTC)And it's Barnaby and she's all "oh it's you. -_-"
And he's polite and pleasant and trolls her relentlessly through the whole thing doing stuff like making her think he bought her CD when he actually hasn't even heard the song, and turning the interview around on her, and at the end he tells her next week Wild Tiger will be her guest and she gets excited again: "Really?!"
"Just kidding."
"I HATE YOU SO MUCH OMG."
Then they get an emergency call and bitch at each other all the way out the door.

Date: 2011-07-05 09:31 pm (UTC)Karina and her crush on Kotetsu are adorable. I can't pick a favorite character, though, because every time I think I know someone does something that makes me love them the most.
Next episode is probably going to kill me.
