joiedecombat: (Deranged Fandom)

So, yeah, I completely failed to post the content I intended over my weekend. Instead, here's a meme.

a. Post a list of 15 fandoms.
b. Have your friends list guess your favourite character from each one.
c. When guessed, bold the line, include the character name, and write a sentence about why you like that character

1) Weiss Kreuz: Aya. What can I say. I like them broken. I like the guys who live in their heads a lot and withdraw from other people and try too hard to maintain control of themselves and not let on how they feel.
I wonder what that says about me.
2) The X-Men: Rogue. How could I not? A superheroine from Mississippi. One who doesn't dress like a stripper, at least not on-duty. One who is rarely if ever victimized in order to provide a male hero with angst. One who gets out there and fistfights with the bad guys instead of fighting with the Power Of Her Mind. And is good at it.
3) Final Fantasy VIII: Squall. Absolutely nobody is surprised. See the explanation for Aya, times two, and with the added appeal of greater vulnerability underneath the tough shell.
4) the Heralds of Valdemar et al: Kerowyn. For essentially the same reasons I like Rogue minus the Mississippi thing and the superhero-specific stuff. Also, she's the heroine of the first full-length fantasy novel I ever read. Practical mercenary captain. Snarky. I dig.
5) Dragonlance: Tanis. Not that I didn't start wanting to smack him at points throughout Chronicles. In retrospect, he has some things in common with Squall, though he's more functional. Why are my favorite male characters so much more messed-up than my favorite female ones? No wonder I'm single.
6) Star Trek
7) CSI: Grissom. Socially inept Zen supergeek. What's not to love?
8) seaQuest: Lucas. I was fifteen. He was adorable. What do you want?
9) Inuyasha: Sango. Although there is another I will also accept here, since which of them is my very favorite is pretty much a cointoss depending on how I feel when you ask. But I love Sango for the same reason I love Rogue and Kero - she's a physically capable and mentally strong female character. She has gone toe to toe with Inuyasha; she has no super powers but is the strongest combatant in the group after Inuyasha. She is so cool that Inuyasha went out of his way to invite her along and try (in his surly backwards teenage boy way) to make her feel better. She's suffered tragedy, but doesn't flaunt her angst, and when she does occasionally break down it's realistic. Also, her relationship with Miroku is the coolest over.
10) Gargoyles: Elisa Maza. Noticing a pattern yet? 'Nother tough lady, and very, very normal in comparison to most of the rest of the characters. Which I also like.
11) the Dresden Files: Michael. What is cool in a supporting character might get old in a main character, but Michael is pretty much everything I like about the paladin archetype, plus being a pretty regular guy.
12) the entire James Bond franchise
13) Lord of the Rings: Aragorn. For a change, a functional guy! He's so calm and steady and badass. Credit for his presence on this list may be given to Viggo Mortensen.
14) Buffy: Giles. English and smart and adorable and vaguely, non-creepily paternal. Also, the only character in the whole series who didn't start sucking somewhere along the way.
15) Sailor Moon: Sailor Jupiter. For basically the same reasons as Rogue. She defeated at least one monster of the day without actually transforming, I am pretty sure. Just beat the hell out of it.
