I drove back to Starkville yesterday, to spend Christmas with my mother and grandparents and uncles and other relations. It was, as always, entertaining, although the extra work I've been doing meant I was pretty well burnt out on people before I even went. Fortunately, my family understands by limited ability to be social, and don't mind if I wander off to sit at a computer for a while, or whatever.

For a change, though, I tried taking the Natchez Trace part of the way home. It was worthwhile, and I plan to go that route from now on... two quiet lanes, with little if any traffic, with picturesque woods and the occasionally neatly-trimmed expanse of grass or black and brown and misty green of a cypress marsh alongside. It made for a very restful drive, and especially on Sunday morning, after rain the previous night, some really lovely sights. My favorite stretch is the part that runs alongside the reservoir, with pine woods to one side and the water brushed silver on the other, and sunlight angling stripes of faded gold across the road through the trees, and the sky blue up ahead except for a wisp of a mare's tail cloud with a swath of prism colors glowing brightly out of it this afternoon as I made my way back. The sort of visuals people write haiku about.

Of course, it took me three tries to find the ramp onto the Trace, and then I was enjoying the drive so much Sunday morning that I didn't take the turn off I was supposed to. Or the one after it. So I had to turn around. Still, it was a nice drive.

Back to work in the morning. Training for a new program for 2006. Whee.
