And because the other fic I posted today actually had purpose to it and significance with regards to characterization and that good stuff...

...here's some totally gratuitous Mwu/Murrue fluff.

I'm kind of embarrassed by this one; it bears a resemblance to some of the more annoying fic I've found elsewhere in the fandom, and I should know better. (The resemblance mostly lying in the whole concept of Murrue Working Too Hard and Mwu Coming To The Rescue, although there is certainly a basis for it in canon; the annoyance comes more from the fact that there's too much fic out there casting Murrue as the workaholic who determinedly neglects her own well-being and Mwu as the wise, with-it guy who is there to take care of her and doesn't seem to have problems of his own. I hate the idea of perpetuating that kind of thing.) It came about mostly as an excuse for Mwu's remark about discipline (because he so would).

Next fic I write for these characters will be less pointless, I promise.

"Still working?"

Leaning in through the door of the captain's office, Mwu watched Murrue look up from a stack of papers and offer him a brief, rueful smile. "It seems like there's always one more thing," she said. "I'll call it a night after I finish going over this report. You might as well go on."

Ignoring her last comment, he stepped through the open doorway, nudging the controls to slide the door closed behind him before wandering across the office and around her desk. "What is that?" he asked, leaning to look at the report over her shoulder, and resting a hand absently against the curve where her shoulder met her neck.

"Another report from Orb intelligence," she told him. "Kisaka suggested I have a look at it."

"Oh." He spent a few seconds skimming the printout, fingers kneading at the tension beneath his hand. "Anything very bad?"

A breath left her in an audible sigh. "No worse than we knew already."

She didn't say 'which was bad enough,' but the weight in her voice and the strain in her posture said it for her. "Well," Mwu said lightly, settling his free hand on her other shoulder, "that's something, anyway."

"Mm," she said, focusing on the report again with an effort while Mwu occupied himself with massaging her shoulders.

Or tried to focus, anyway. "That's distracting," she observed after a short interval.

"It had better be," he replied cheerfully, "or I'm not doing it right."

With a sighing laugh, she went back to reading... but her head kept trying to drop. When a knot of tension released beneath his hands, the breath caught in her throat. "I can't concentrate while you're doing that."

"So take a break." He let a beat pass before adding helpfully, "I think you read that page twice."

Murrue made an exasperated noise, but she let the pages fall, slumping gradually forward to fold her arms on the desktop. "This is why militaries have rules about fraternization," she said.

Mwu took advantage of the extra space to begin working his way down her back. "Should I report to my commanding officer later for discipline?" he wondered. "That could be fun."

"Mwu," she protested, but she was laughing as she said it.

"See," he said, as she let her head come to rest on her folded arms, "isn't that better?" He worked his fingers into the taut muscles of her lower back until she moaned softly.

Because she couldn't see it, Mwu grinned to himself triumphantly. Victorious as always.

Heee. They are so damn cute. ♥

(Although augh, everything I hear about fanon!Mwu just makes me hate him more.)

It is not, fortunately, all like that, and a couple of the more promising and prolific fanwriters at ff.net have come around to latching onto the idea of Mwu as the more damaged of the two of them.

Which leads to things like angsty alternate ending for phase 49 fic in which he doesn't quite get the Strike in position in time to block the positron beam and the Archangel blows up, so he kamikazes the Dominion instead.

But what can you do?

Wow, there's hope for the fandom yet!

...ouch. Admittedly, he would do that. But why would you want to mess with the end of phase 49? It was perfect!

...oh, wait. Canon messes with the end of phase 49. Sigh...

I have been doing my best to coax them towards better characterization, though I do not suppose I can actually take credit for much of anything. Fanon Murrue, sadly, has yet to show significant signs of improvement, what with the consistently being portrayed as uptight and working too hard and not taking care of herself and insecure and the whole Buttercup thing.

But I have hopes.

And no, I have no idea why anyone would want to mess with the end of phase 49. My issue with that particular fic was less the kamikaze and more the incredibly cheesy dialogue between Mwu, Natarle, and Azrael.

Oh, I agree. I think that after Lacus, Murrue is probably the sanest and most emotionally resilient major character in the series, which is why they can get away with Mwu's death - she can cope, sad as it is.

Thank you! That is very reassuring. I'm always worried that I've gone either way too fluffy or way too angsty - these are bad habits of mine.

(Also, eee looking forward to seeing more of them from you.)

Awwww, sad chibi!Dearka.

And, wow, thanks. *big eyes* [livejournal.com profile] annwyd basically lured me into SEED with Mwu, so it was no surprise when he and Murrue both pwned me utterly. They are awesome.

I'm glad you think I do them justice!
