joiedecombat: (money troubles)
So I checked my bank balance today, after shelling out the payment for car repairs mentioned previously. $590 left. I winced.

And then it occurred to me that not only did I have almost six hundred dollars to my name not including the $2000 or $2500some tucked away in savings, I was wincing over it.

And there will be a new paycheck deposited next Friday, as per usual.

Granted, rent is going to swallow most of that whole on February 1, not to mention other bills, and this will probably serve as motivation to end a couple of subscriptions I'd been meaning to cancel anyhow...

But it's still an oddly buoying thought.

Turned out to be fairly simple, thankfully, involving a couple of belts and a few other things which were overdue for maintenance. Less than $200, including the tow. I'll be walking over there shortly to pick it up.

It appears that my good car luck is still in effect.

Car update: fixed! A new starter and $312.59 later, it's running again. I'll be a little twitchy about how it runs for a while, but the guys at Express Oil Change (who repaired it, in addition to hiking across parking lots to look at it in the first place and then pushing it up the hill to the shop) told me to call them if I have any more trouble. I like this place quite a bit, and while I don't know much about cars or how much repairs should cost, it's safely within my budget and I don't mind paying for that kind of service. They're currently my shop of choice.

Here's hoping there are no more problems for a while.

I talked to the insurance company today. The guy I spoke to was very brisk and efficient; he contacted the other driver and, though it's not confirmed yet, he's confident the insurance will cover the repairs to my car, to the point that he arranged an appointment for me at a local body shop on Thursday. So now I'm just waiting for the Mobile office to call and dot all the i's.

I also missed a callback on a job application. Go fig. Hopefully Jeanie convinced them to call back, at which point either I'll be there or Jeanie will give them the number here.

It's just Movie Gallery, but it's the first callback I've received. At all. Ever. So I hope they do call again. Jeanie said the store they want me for hasn't even been built yet, so maybe they will. If this does go through, it'll be a job I won't mind ditching should I be accepted for the JET program. Yay!

Fingers crossed.

I've got slightly more than a week until I journey to the Land Of The Yuppies in hopes of long-term employment in the media industry.

See Abby. See Abby spaz. Spaz, Abby, spaz.

I've been sorting through my clothes, and now have a ginormous pile of laundry to do and a surprising number of pretty nice outfits. My grandmother took me out today and set me up with three more, including a hot hot omg so hot red sheath dress that I can definitely not wear to interviews, but the hotness of which can be subtly disguised by a blazer for actual work purposes. All of this assuming that a) I get the job and b) it does not permit me to continue my normal pattern of wearing jeans every day.

Gran also set me up with an appointment to get my hair cut, which is another item knocked off my list of "should do but probably can't actually afford." The list now consists solely of getting my car inspected and getting something done about my teeth. I'll probably call for an appointment for the latter sometime today, get a cleaning, and find out what else will need to be done in the future.

Adrienne at work told me today that they can't employ me past the 31st, which is fine because I'm planning to leave somewhere between the 1st and the 3rd anyhow. So that was really actually good news. The bad news is that I'm stuck working mornings until then. Blah.

So for the time being, I do laundry, watch impatiently for the mail and listen to the Most Determinedly Energetic J-Pop Ever. No, really.

For some reason, Inuyasha has the peppiest, most rarr rarr enthusiastic rarr rarr opening themes I have ever heard. These songs are the best things in the world for firing up some energy to get busy doing something. Cases in point: "Change The World" by V6, "Grip!" by Every Little Thing, and "Itazurana Kiss" by Day After Tomorrow. The ending themes are also pretty damn spiffy, being generally a little more mellow. Do As Infinity in particular has this unhurried but intense folk-rock thing going on in songs like "Fukai Mori" and "Shinjitsu no Uta," good stuff. Must also take a moment to plug Every Little Thing's ballad "Ai No Uta."

So many things that I want but have no money to spare for. Albums from the abovementioned bands included. Sulk.

Oh well. Once I am employed, books, CDs, and DVDs ahoy.

Tank's hysterical yapping at the window heralds the arrival of the mail, so off I go.
